Rethinking the Future of Work in the Age of AI by Professor Nazrul Islam
In an era defined by digital transformation and intelligent systems, the conversation around Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace often centres on disruption and displacement. This talk challenges that narrative – advocating instead for a future built on worker–AI coexistence. The invited IAMOT talk 2026 explores the evolving relationship between AI and the human workforce in a rapidly digitising economy. Drawing from cutting-edge research and policy engagement – including recognition by the White House in the 2024 Economic Report of the U.S. President – Professor Nazrul Islam offers a forward-thinking framework for worker–AI coexistence. The talk addresses the shifting landscape of connected systems and data-driven economies, highlighting how AI is currently deployed in workplaces and the challenges posed by data integration, transparency, and trust. Through real-world examples and thematic analysis, it introduces a skills-based model – emphasising the importance of technical, human, and conceptual competencies – as a foundation for effective collaboration between workers and intelligent systems. The talk presents powerful propositions on how AI can empower resilience, collaboration, and innovation in modern organisations: that AI enhances worker resilience; that organisational preparedness determines the success of AI adoption; and that systems should be designed around human experience – not just machine capabilities. It concludes with practical recommendations for leaders and policymakers on inclusive AI strategies, workforce reskilling, and creating equitable, future-ready workplaces. Attendees will leave with actionable insights on how to design inclusive, ethical, and future ready workplaces – where AI serves as a collaborator rather than a competitor.
